The Active Listener Presents More English Weather

Bob Stanley & Pete Wiggs' "English Weather" is quite probably my favourite album of the last year or so. Stanley and Wiggs have done a fantastic job of selecting and sequencing these tracks to provide a seamless and unspoiled listening experience that is quintessentially English and wonderfully pastoral. Not to mention one that introduced me to a number of artists that I wasn't really familiar with.

In tribute, I've put together a follow up volume of tunes from the UK from the same era that evoke a similar mood for me. I'd like to think that Stanley and Wiggs had some of these shortlisted for their comp. Sound quality may vary as tracks come from a number of sources.

I hope you enjoy it - you can download it in 320 kb mp3 format here, and please investigate the full albums of these artists as many of the albums that these tracks originate from are classics in their own right.

And you can get Bob Stanley & Pete Wiggs Present: English Weather here.

Moongazing Hare & Trappist Afterland Sing Songs For Nathan

As those who follow me on Facebook will know, I've been receiving treatment for cancer (which we're confident will sorted by this treatment).

Two of our favourite acts have been ridiculously generous with their time and put together an album to help raise funds for me and my family while I recover from the treatment.

Thank you so much to Moongazing Hare and Trappist Afterland who have put together Songs for Nathan, which includes covers of songs originally by Lal Waterson, Coil, Syd Barrett and the Mountain Goats, as well as tackling one of each other's tunes apiece and providing an original track each.

It's a lovely thing and I'm blown away by the kindness of those who have donated their efforts towards this project.

Here's a review from The Sunday Experience.

You can purchase the album here - any donations are very gratefully received. Thanks everyone.

The Final Active Listener Sampler

As we limp towards our retirement here at the Active Listener we have one final sampler for you (for now - who knows what the future holds?) - this one has a $1 download charge (to try and cover our bandcamp costs), but as always you're very welcome to stream for free.

I've loved putting these together over the years, and it's gratifying to know that these are enjoyed by so many.

Time is pressing so I'll just say thanks to Paul Thomas for the splendid sleeve art and all of the featured artists (and all involved with previous samplers).

We've still got a few reviews up our sleeves but after that things will go quiet for a wee while.

In the meantime live well, be kind and curious, and have a fabulous Christmas and New Year from the Active Listener xx

Stream / Download new Shadowgraphs Double A-Side with Pink Floyd & Kinks Covers.

Charlotte, North Carolina based neo-psychedelic band Shadowgraphs have followed up their debut EP "Return to Zero" with a new double sided single "Midnight Tea".

Art by Delilah Jones
"Midnight Tea" features covers of Pink Floyd's "See Emily Play" and early Kinks rarity "This Strange Effect".

Shadowgraphs' Charles Glade explains: "Between “Return to Zero” and our follow-up LP (due out in the summer time) Bryan had just finished setting up his new 24 track tape machine. We knew that the quality was going to change, and we wanted to get used to using it before we jumped right into a big LP so that we understood what to watch out for, how to organize, how to calibrate each time, etc. Simultaneously Bryan had been wanting to do a cover for a while and thought that he would surprise his girlfriend, who was half way across the world at the time, with a song directed to her. This song was “This Strange Effect”. " Tackling this and the more challenging "See Emily Play" has opened doors for the band Glade explains: "This song was an awesome experience for everyone in the band. We were playing things on different instruments that we wouldn’t usually mess with, which has given us a lot of ideas for our new LP"

That new LP is expected for Summer, and will be a more ambitious affair than anything the band have attempted so far "There will definitely be more instrumentation. I know this time around we are going to include horns , vibraphones, real plate reverbs, and some more things…" teases Glade.

In the meantime Shadowgraphs will be playing Phuzzphest in April with Neon Indian, The Ohh Sees, Chairlift and Sunflower Bean, as well as a gallery art show in Charlotte NC tonight (26 Feb), and shows on March 3rd at Snug Harbor, Charlotte NC and March 11 in Winston Salem, NC. Checkout their Facebook page for more info.

"Midnight Tea" can be downloaded and streamed here:

The Kinks Live November 27-29, 1969 Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA - Soundboard

It's hard to find good quality live material from the Kinks in their prime, but here's a great quality soundboard recording from a series of shows recorded at the fabled Fillmore West in November 1969 - some of their first US shows after a four year ban.
Village Green and Arthur had both been recently released, but had performed poorly in the US commercially. This didn't stop Ray and co. from mixing plenty of their newer, more rarely performed material amongst the hits for a fascinating cross section of sixties Kinks. Great stuff!

Tracklist:
1. Till The End of the Day
2. Mindless Child of Motherhood
3. Last of the Steam Powered Trains
4. You're Looking Fine
5. Mr. Churchill Says
6. Big Sky
7. You Really Got Me
8. Love Me Till The Sun Shines
9. Brainwashed
10. Milk Cow Blues / See My Friends / Tired of Waiting For You / Brainwashed
11. Louie Louie

Nous Sommes Paris

While we have no desire to introduce politics and religion into the mix here at the Active Listener, sometimes these things can't (and shouldn't) be ignored.

So calling in a few favours, and generally working ourselves into a bit of a tizzy, we've spent the last week furiously emailing around and compiling this massive, 35 track collection, which is yours for a steal at only $10 (or more if you can afford it). All proceeds will go to the French Red Cross in their efforts to aid the survivors as well as the families of the victims of those affected by the incidents in Paris on Friday the 13th of November.

Thanks first and foremost to the artists who have kindly contributed to this collection (as well as their labels, management and publishing companies). We'd have nothing to offer without their generous contributions, and they've been very patient with my erratic correspondence. They've provided some great music, much of which is previously unreleased or very hard to come by. We're humbled by their generosity.

And thanks also to Matt Talbot for his thoughtful and tasteful cover image.

Here's the impressive track listing:

1. Courtney Barnett - Ode To Odetta 02:46 2. The Sufis - Different Views 02:42 3. The Phoenix Foundation - I Want More 04:19 4. The Limiñanas - Wunderbar 02:31 5. WJLP - Sunrise 03:21 6. New Release Available from Active Listener Records: Kitchen Cynics - Common Blue

We're priviliged today to be digitally releasing the latest album from prolific Scottish psych-folk artist the Kitchen Cynics. We often wax lyrical about the artists we love here on the Active Listener, and occasionally when we're really lucky, we get to release quality material like this, from one of those very same artists.

"Common Blue" is a brand new 2015 studio album from Alan Davidson, and it's not alone: in the next few weeks we'll also be releasing "Rainthinking", another new studio release, this time from Davidson's more experimental group, Matricarians.

CD-Rs of both titles are available directly from Alan (kitchencynics@googlemail.com)

You can stream, or download "Common Blue" here:

Free Download Roundup – Mystic Brew / Walter Ghoul’s Lavender Brigade / The Age / Hermione Harvestman

Reviews by Nathan Ford

Mystic Brew - Space is the Place to Be

While many psychedelic artists bristle at the idea that they're part of a revival, Russian band Mystic Brew proudly apply the 'sixties revival' tag to all of their Bandcamp releases. The most recent of these, "Space is the Place to Be", is exactly the sort of influence-on-sleeve homage that we love so much here at Active Listener Towers. There's a well observed, affectionate Doors tribute in "World Won’t be the Same", but the band are at their best when they rely less on their influences and pursue their own muse. The title track demonstrates this best, all vintage garage vibes, Manzarekian keys (again) and explorative guitar jams straining at the leash.

Available as a free download here (as are some of their earlier releases):

Walter Ghoul's Lavender Brigade .... Is Coming

While we're in tribute / homage territory let's check out Walter Ghoul's Lavender Brigade. Originally released in 1999, this excellent effort from Damien Youth and the less prolific, but equally fab Zane Armstrong has recently found its way onto Bandcamp as a free download. It’s an unabashed love letter to UK sixties psych-pop, essentially borrowing the Dukes of Stratosphear's bag of neo-psychedelic tricks, and ramping up the lysergic fairground elements. It's a colourful wonderland which suggests Syd Barrett has been enlisted in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, bringing a top tier selection of tunes along for the ride.

The original twelve track album can be had on a name your own price / free basis through the streaming link below, while those who want to dig deeper can buy a complete 26 track collection of the Brigade from Damien Youth's Bandcamp page.

The Age - Trafalgar

Halifax, Nova Scotia seems to be one of the planet's psychedelic hotspots for the time being. And thanks to the wonders of the interweb we get to hear the filtered through effects of whatever it is that's in the water there. Justin McGrath obviously drinks a lot of that water. We've covered his band Shadow Folk numerous times within these pages, and here he is aboard another equally psychedelic, and potentially even more splendid flagship, the Age. Title track "Trafalgar" is a hazy mirage of a song, with gently undulating harmony vocals, and layers of dreamy backwards guitars. Lovely. But don't relax too much because "Innocent Man" is a much more raucous affair, sounding like a vintage rehearsal recording from some previously unknown Lennon / Kinks collaboration.

Download the EP through the streaming link below, and have a dig around the rest of their Bandcamp page for more free downloads.

Hermione Harvestman - Lammas

We've talked about hermetic rambler Hermione Harvestman before, and I’m sure we'll continue to do so while her archival Bandcamp page is excavating naturalistic yet unearthly gems like this. For those unfamiliar, Hermione Harvestman was a church organist who composed spectacular solo electronic pieces in her spare time, amassing an impressive catalogue of Radiophonic kosmische gems, which have only begun to find their way into the world since her death in 2012.

"Lammas" is the latest of these, a single, lengthy meditation upon the festival, filtered through the usual gorgeous vintage synth tones, which conjure images of ley lines and stone circles. Harvestman's unhurried, understated approach is unmatched in my opinion, and this is as good a place as any to fall under her spell. Lovers of vintage kosmische sounds will absolutely adore this.

The Active Listener's Acid Folk Sampler Volume Two

Here's a very late follow-up to our first Acid Folk Sampler, which came out back in 2012. We had a heap of submissions from many, many talented artists, so working out what to feature was very, very difficult indeed. As a result we've ended up with something of a mammoth volume, with 26 tracks in total - hopefully not too much for you all to digest!

There's quite a wide array of sounds here, with plenty of Wicker Man-esque folk-horror, pagan folk, acid-folk, some Hauntology / rural electronic sounds that bridge the gap between Nic Jones and Boards of Canada, and a selection of more overtly psychedelic folk tunes nestled near the middle of the mix.

You are welcome to download free of charge - just enter $0 into the payment field - or if you enjoy our services, please consider making a small donation to help cover our various costs. Download here.

We're pretty proud of how great this mix turned out - it's a great showcase of what the current underground wyrd folk scene has to offer. Thanks to all of the featured artists, and to you for listening.
